"The hour of the pearl - the interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself" is at dusk, not dawn. Not that I have anything against sunrises, unlike some people (Kristian!).
I just really like dusk.

This is doubleplus true. It ought to be inserted in the page where Steinbeck flawed.
They could have an asterisk and then:

i would also have to agree with you. dusk is far quieter and reflective. dawn is too busy waking up and getting ready for the day to do any examining of time. see, there's three ready to support your cause. i think you should do something about this.
